Repair or Replace Your Device This EOFY? An Honest Answer | King IT

18th May 2026

Because the most expensive thing you can do right now is replace something that didn't need replacing. And the second most expensive thing is waiting too long to replace something that does.

At King IT, our honest answer is always the same: let us look at it first. Here's how we think about it.

When repair is almost always the better call

The device is under four years old and working fine — except for one thing. A cracked screen, a dying battery, a charging port that's stopped charging properly. These are the easiest, cheapest fixes we do. A new battery on a three-year-old phone can give it another two or three good years.

It's running slowly — but not because the hardware is old. A surprising number of "slow" laptops just need a clean install, a storage clear-out, or a memory upgrade. Often the device is fine. The setup isn't.

You're attached to it — and that's a real reason. If it has your photos, your apps the way you like them, your set-up just right — and the fix is reasonable — repair. Familiarity is worth something.

When replace is the honest answer

It can't be updated anymore. If your phone or laptop is no longer getting security updates from the manufacturer, it's increasingly exposed. We'll tell you straight if you're at this point.

The repair cost is more than half the cost of a comparable new one. This is a rough rule, not a hard one. But once you're spending $600 to fix a device that's worth $700 used, the maths usually doesn't work.

It's been repaired before — for the same thing. If we've replaced the screen twice and the battery once, the device is telling you something. Better to put that money toward a replacement that'll last.

It's slowing you down every day. If you're losing 10 minutes a day to a laggy laptop, that's about 60 hours a year. At some point, the cost isn't the price of the device. It's the cost of putting up with it.

The middle path most people don't know about

A refurbished device. Properly checked, properly set up, often half the price of new, with a warranty. For a lot of customers — especially when budget matters and the use case is everyday email, browsing, school work, light business — refurbished is the smartest spend of the year.

We have refurbished bundles available across the EOFY season. They're not seconds. They're devices that have been professionally restored to working condition and tested before they go on the shelf.
